Associated Press:
Sony Corp. racked up a record annual loss of 457 billion yen ($5.7 billion) in its fourth straight year of red ink as the once-glorious maker of the Walkman and PlayStation struggles toward a turnaround under a new president.
The electronics and entertainment company, which also makes “Spider-Man” movies, reported Thursday a loss of 255 billion yen ($3.2 billion) for the January-March period — its fifth straight quarterly net loss to round out a fiscal year that was the worst in its 66-year corporate history.
I don’t think it is completely unlikely that five years from now only Apple and Samsung will be left in the tech industry. Motorola, Nintendo, RIM, and Sony do not seem able to resist Apple’s disruption in the long term.

A new contestant for the best toy ever made. EVER.
You can buy them here for $99.95 each. Alas, there’s no red one or the official light saber sound effects.
My favorite podcast player on the iPhone was updated to version 2.0 with a streamlined interface and a lot of new features, and a new low price of just 99 cents.
My favorite one so far is that I can now add bookmarks to specific sections of a podcast and start a discussion on Twitter.
My least favorite are the new iCloud-esque icons on the player drawer. They really don’t match with the rest of the app at all.
You can check my review of the iPad version here.
Never, ever give up.
Building Windows 8 blog:
In the process of building a robust platform, we’ve also evaluated which in-box media playback experiences we want to provide. The media landscape has changed quite significantly since the release of Windows 7. Our telemetry data and user research shows us that the vast majority of video consumption on the PC and other mobile devices is coming from online sources such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, or any of the other myriad of online and downloadable video services available. In fact, consumption of movies online in the United States will surpass physical video in 2012, according to this recent IHS Screen Digest research.
Given the changing landscape, the cost of decoder licensing, and the importance of a straight forward edition plan, we’ve decided to make Windows Media Center available to Windows 8 customers via the Add Features to Windows 8 control panel (formerly known as Windows Anytime Upgrade). This ensures that customers who are interested in Media Center have a convenient way to get it. Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray.
RIP, DVD.

Mark Gurman:
Apple’s update to OS X Lion Preview 3 adds a very helpful new “Do Not Disturb” feature for notifications. The feature is a toggle accessible at the top of Notification Center that allows users to block incoming alerts and banners.
Please, please, please add this to iOS 6 and let us set an automatic time range like Tweetbot does.
